Edward Tuite Dalton (1815-1880) was a military administrator in the north-east of India both before and after the 'Indian Mutiny' of 1856/1857. This is a facsimile of Dalton's remarkable 1872 work entitled "Descriptive Ethnology of Bengal". It is a descriptive account of the ways of life and economy, with vocabulary lists, of some 50 distinct groupings of tribal people in the lowlands and highlands of north-east India and the borderlands. The 37 outstanding sepia photographic plates present personalities from ways of life now all but extinct.
