The Spirits of the Yellow Leaves: The Enigmatic Hunter-Gatherers of Northern Thailand. This is the 2005 translation of the 1938 German work by the Austrian anthropologist and photographer Hugo Bernatzik (1897-1953). Based on his 1935/6 field studies Bernatzik describes the way of life of Mlabri people, hunters of the Thai/Burma borderlands who now number only some 300. There is also an Mlabri word list and linguistic analysis. Short accounts of a group of Meau tribespeople and of a Lahu group together with an account of some Moi peoples in the then-Indochina are also included. While the approach of Bernatzik seems outmoded in several significant ways, he does convey information about the region's minority peoples. With index, glossary, remarkable black-and-white photographs and also an essay on Bernatzik's linguistic work by Professor Jorgen Rischel of Copenhagen.
