Most of the New Villages of West Malaysia were created to "resettle squatters" during the early years of the 1948-1960 Emergency. Some 500,000 people were settled into New Villages. In 2002, the New Village population was 1.25 million, of which about 82% were ethnic Chinese. Using a wide range of primary statistics and archival photographs this book sets out the history of New Villages and their present administrative structure, economic activities and social needs.
