2010 reissue of the 1986 Cornell translation of selected passages from memoirs of the Japanese Occupation of Indonesia written by members of the Kempeitai (Japanese military police). The memoirs were originally published in 1976, 1982 and 1983. The introduction points out that the writers show pride and satisfaction without contrition and that the accounts often differ markedly from the recollections of Indonesians and others involved in incidents cited. The confused loyalties between Japanese/Dutch/Allied/Independence pressures at the end of the Japanese Occupation are made evident. Bibliography.
