This anthropological study explores a suburban area of Beijing which exemplifies many of the profound changes in class structure and social expectations which have emerged since the Maoist era. Indepth interviews help to cast light onto ongoing developments in the patterns of housing, social stratification, migration, education and personal hopes and fears in this now largely middle class suburb.
