This is a very funny account of a poignant and at times surreal 1989 road trip taken by an American journalist in Vietnam. Chaperoned by the Vietnamese propaganda ministry, he drove from Hanoi to the Mekong Delta. From the lush, brooding landscape to the inexhaustible goodwill of his hosts despite the shattering poverty, the author ponders this strange experience that exists outside the American imagination of Vietnam.
