Seven international scholars contribute to this dense exploration of perceptions and presentations of sites of history, memory and identity in modern China. The three papers on leaders and their legacy look at: the site of the Qin Terracotta Warriors, Shanxi Province; the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall, Taipei; and the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, Beijing. Four papers then explore the memorial roles of the four sites: the Song Emperor's Terrace outside Hong Kong's former Kai Tak Airport; Humen, the Tiger gate site of the Chinese destruction of opium stocks in 1839; the ruins of the old Summer Palace, Beijing destroyed by foreigners in 1860 and 1900; at Yan'an, Shaanxi, the 1936-48 headquarters of Communist revolutionary forces.
