Mien Relations: Mountain People and State Control in Thailand. The Mien, largely upland people of Northern Thailand, are usually regarded as belonging to the Yao ethnic group. Field study in the 1990s is the basis of this ethnographic discussion of the complex interactions and relations of the Mien people with modern Thai society. The beliefs and history of the Mien, their occupations and role in Thailand's economy, their problems with officialdom and non-representation in policy decisions, perceptions of self and place in sports and tourism are all discussed. With bibliography and index.
