The author of this book was Australian Broadcasting Corporation representative in Beijing from 1983-86. In this account of her time in China - which included of course the Tiananmen Incident - she has incorporated perceptive letters written to family and friends by her partner John Martin (d 2002) while he was posted at the Australian Embassy.
