From Emergency to Confrontation: The New Zealand Armed Forces in Malaya and Borneo 1949-66. Official and other records were used by the author of this substantial history of New Zealand's often-forgotten 1949-66 participation in counter-insurgency actions in Malaya and Brunei. The rationale of New Zealand's commitments and the nature of their transport, communication, and jungle warfare and air services roles are overviewed. Policy changes, training, the achievements of the Fijian units, garrison and family facilities, naval service and the long-term impact of this first substantial involvement of New Zealanders in Southeast Asia are among the subjects discussed with much use of case interviews and archived memoirs.
