Dhammayangyi, The Pyramid by the Irrawaddy: The Biography of a Temple, Its People and the Kingdom of Pagan. The towering pyramidal temple the Dhammayangi at Pagan (Bagan) was built in the 12th century C.E. It is now somewhat ruined and is the site of many legends of tragedy and violence. This is not a guidebook although there are colour photographs of the building and its ancient artefacts. It is a personal account of the author's visits to the temple, of the associated sagas and of the lively children who lived around it in the late 1980s. With sketch maps, glossary and reading list.
