Demarcating Ethnicity in New Nations: Cases of the Chinese in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. Ten separately referenced specialist papers address issues concerning Chinese ethnic relations and nation building in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Among the many subjects and aspects explored are: the founding of Nanyang University; the roles of clan associations in Singapore; ethnic exclusions in Malaysia; 20th-century Malaysian Chinese writers; and social riots in Indonesia 1994-7. These submissions are revised versions of papers originally presented in Chinese at the 2002 international conference, Ethnic/Race Relations and Nation-Building: The Case of Ethnic Chinese in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.
