These 21 papers, by Vietnamese and international scholars, are selected from those presented at the "Asian Values and Vietnam's Development in Comparative Perspectives" conference held in Hanoi in 2000. Two papers on European values provide a valuable juxtaposition with papers on Asian values, but the conclusion are that there is no absolute opposition between the Asian and European values. Similarly, papers on governance, legislation and economic development point to the advantage of Asian values in some respects, but conclude that more Western oriented values are important for building a society in the modern world.
