2009 reissue of the 1989 Cornell study of the 1948 Madiun Communist uprising which has been interpreted in many different ways. Contemporary newspapers and other reports are the basis of this account of the turbulent period when Java was divided and the Dutch were seeking to enforce the Renville Agreements on the Republic led by Hatta and Soekarno. The various strands, including the Soviet influence, which made up the PKI's dissatisfaction with the Republic's policy are described. Many theories as to the aims and structure of the rising at Madiun of Sept-Dec 1948 are reviewed. Relevant documents, including some held to be forgeries, are appended.
