The Lao Kingdom of Lan Xang existed in the Mekong region from the 14th-18th century. Much of its history is accessible only in those often-arcane Court Chronicles that have survived. An overview of the area's prehistory and settlement introduces the account, mainly derived from newly translated chronicles, of the unified Lao kingdom, which emerged amid the contending powers in mainland Southeast Asia. Invasions from Siamese, Burmese, and Vietnamese forces are described and the 1827-8 Lao-Siamese war is related to the 1893 annexation of the E.Mekong area by France. With sketch maps, time charts, bibliography, index and extensive notes.
