The Chinese Vegetarian Festival in Phuket: Religion, Ethnicity and Tourism on a Southern Thai Island. A detailed ethnographic study of the most popular and complex religious event in southern Thailand. The author is a sociologist at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. This work is based on extensive fieldwork undertaken in the 1990s, and the focus of his analysis of the interrelationship between the dynamics of the festival, Chinese ethnicity of contemporary Thailand and the development of tourism in the increasingly popular tourist destination of Phuket.
