The Straits Chinese doctor Lim Boon Keng (1869-1957) was also a reformer, scholar and business leader whose influence and ideas were felt in many spheres. In 1901, he published The Chinese Crisis from Within under his pen name, Wen Ching. This book made available his newspaper articles to the English-language public and offered up-to-date knowledge and insights on the often-chaotic situation in much of China following the Boxer Uprising of 1900. Part 1 concerns the ongoing Reformist movement in China and its leaders including Kang Yu Wei (who at one time had sheltered in Dr Lim's home). Part 2 is on the Empress-Dowager Tzu Hsi and her Manchu supporters; and Part 3 addresses China's relations with world powers.
