In 1996, seventeen rolls of painted cotton cloth were discovered in a cupboard in the Grand Palace, Bangkok. Subsequent research in Thailand and at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, confirmed they were hand-drawn, hand-coloured maps from the early Chakri period 1782-c.1850. This richly illustrated, scholarly study shows the artistic beauty of the maps, compares the cartography with contemporary and modern maps and shows how they present the trade, warfare and sometimes ethnography of Thailand, East and Southeast Asia at that period. With bibliography and index.
