Shanghai-born painter and calligrapher Huang Yao (1917-1987) was the creator of the famous Niu Bi Zi comic strip, popular in China in the 1930s. In 1977, he painted 100 Children At Play, a large scroll featuring pigtailed, rosy-cheeked Chinese youngsters playing a variety of traditional and seasonal games outdoors.
