About This
Book
The once-successful Armenian community in Singapore has now dwindled to one single full-blooded woman, but it is not too late to learn about the fascinating history of this community in Singapore and Malaysia. The author, Nadia Wright, whose mother is Armenian, spent 18 years researching for this book. Part 1 summarises Armenian history and the rationale for Armenian traders to venture out from Persia to Southeast Asia in the 18th/19th centuries. Part 2 traces Armenian activities in Malacca and Penang, which included the Eastern and Oriental Hotel, opened in 1884. Part 3 details the commercial, civic and private activities of Armenian firms and notable personalities in Singapore, which were in the 19th and early 20th centuries significant in the areas of hospitality, entertainment and entreport trade. Part 4 gives information about Armenian institutions and about 60 familiar who were active in Singapore/Malaysia. An entire chapter is devoted to the "Grand Dame" Raffles Hotel in Singapore, which should bring back memories for some; other Armenian-run hotels profiled include The Adelphi, and the Sea View, which is about to be converted into a block of condominiums.
With photographs, name lists, bibliography and index. A rich resource on one of Southeast Asian byways.
