About This Book

These two volumes are facsimiles of those published by the Hakluyt Society in 1885. Originally translated into Old English in 1598 these volumes, though edited in the 1880s are not always easy for the non-specialist to read, contain certain unique and fascinating material about peoples and conditions in the 16th century. John Huyghen van Linschoten (1563-1611) tells of leaving the Netherlands in 1576 for Seville where he joins the entourage of the Archibishop of Goa. He tells of his voyage to Goa and then of travels, apparently largely as a observer and sightseer, to many places little known in Europe but often where Portuguese traders, navigators and missionaries were active. These included the voyage to Goa via the Cape of Good Hope, Madagascar, Mozambique, Aden and finally to Malabar and Goa. He travelled widely and writes of the peoples of Ceylon, Java, the "East Indies", China, Japan, and Macao. In Volume 2, much information is given on the gems, fruits and other products of Eastern lands, as well as details of the author's chequered return voyage, including a 2-year stay in the Azores. He arrived back in the Netherlands in 1592. With the 1885 index.
