Old Beijing: Postcards From The Imperial City
by Titus, Felicitas
About This Book
The 350 pictures postcards of Old Beijing date from the 1890s when China's capital, Peking, was the focus of much of the world's rapidly developing tourism. Postcards of monuments, notable personalities, local dress styles and street scenes were valued by tourists and cast sidelights on life, costume, historical events such as the Boxer Rebellion and buildings such as the now destroyed Summer Palace and city walls. A historical introduction sets the period and Western views of it into context, and commentaries on the groupings of cards highlight their significance. Bibliography.
