Within Changi's Walls: A Record Of Civilian Internment In World War Ii
by Peet, George L.
About This Book
George Peet (1902-1985) was a well known English-born Straits Times journalist and editor who came to Singapore in 1923. His granddaughter has edited Peet's records of the years 1942-45 when, when during WWII, he was interned in Singapore. Part 1 is Peet's thoughtful journal account of life in Changi prison and the attitudes and interactions of his fellows as they faced severe deprivation, over-crowding and uncertainty. The shorter Part 2 is his diary notes of the period from November 1944 when he had been moved to the Sime Road Camp, until September 1945. Released on 3 September 1945 the first post-Occupation issue of the Straits Times, with an editorial by Peet, appeared on 7 September.
