About This Book
These remarkable photographs were taken from 1862-72 in China and are now in the Wellcome Library. John Thomson (1837-1921) was a Scot who trained as an optician and in 1862 set up a photographic studio in Singapore with his brother. From 1868-72 he was in China and photographed the great and good and also the labouring poor. A selection of these photographs is in this volume. Thomas had a successful studio in London from 1876 and passed his photo collection to Mr Wellcome shortly before his death in 1921.
