This "faction" novel is a reconstruction of the tragic life of Maharaja Duleep Singh (1838-1893), son and heir of Ranjit Singh who in 1839 signed over his Kingdom of Punjab to the British. Through the voices of five people who surrounded his life, the sad tale is told of Duleep's forcible education and resettlement in the United Kingdom as a Christian country squire, his subsequent fruitless wanderings and return to India, and death alone in a cheap Paris hotel.
