Written in an understated and gentle vein this novel, set in final years of Burma's Colonial states, sheds light on some of the underlying factors and attitudes which contributed to the demands for the country's Independence. The British civil servant does marry a Burmese lady and of course the Burmese state did become recognised and independent.
