About This Book
This systematic study of the sacred monuments, murals and inscriptions of the Powin Taung Caves on the Chindwin River of eastern Myanmar is the major addition to the available knowledge of Buddhist history and culture. The texts of the captioned murals in 29 caves and one temple are published and are translated for the first time. Many of the monuments and murals are illustrated with high quality colour plates. Floor and wall plans are given for each cave. With 56 colour plates, 400 photographs, listings in Pali, Burmese and English. The significance of the different art styles is discussed in the last chapter. With bibliography and location maps.
