This study of the social roots of what has been termed the Malay Left is based on a 1975 academic thesis. Much information is brought together on Malay pre-World War II political groups, which contrasted with the existing aristocratic, elite, and largely individual-based, political awareness of the period. The organisation of the reformist KMM (Kesatuan Melayu Muda) in the 1930s, and its commitment to pan-Malay/Indonesianism is reviewed.
