Oceans In World History
by Buschmann, Rainer F.
About This Book
Oceans have of course always divided human societies but they have also linked them. This study explores with a world point of view, some of the cross-cultural trans-oceanic encounters which have been a continuing dimension in human history. Among the case histories discussed are: the Indian Ocean as a crossroads as well as international trade and exploration; cultural, revolutionary and population transitions by the Atlantic Ocean; exploration, settlement and imagination in the Pacific; the transformation of transport, imperial power, maritime resources, migration, health, maritime, law and tourism associated with the 1800-2000 unleashing of sea power. With reading list and index.
