About This Book

A poet, critic, and professor of comparative literature at the Universiti Sains Malaysia studies the traditional concepts of Malay literature found in the texts scattered throughout the Malay Archipelago, including Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia. This collection of conference papers and keynote addresses written over the years has been reworked and organised into five groups. The first explores the pantun and the mantera, or incantation. The second group looks at the traditional forms, concepts and world views in Malay literature, and includes a chapter that discusses the Malay literary character in the literatures of Europe, the US and Asia. The next group analyses orality in Malay literature. The fourth group looks at Malay literature as a form of entertainment and as a means of instruction. The final focuses on the idea of "author", a word which has many definitions in the Malay context. With bibliography and index.
