About This Book

In five chapters, Islam in China overviews the history of Islam in the country. The opening chapter describes the arrival and early spread of Islam in the Middle Kingdom. This is followed by a study of the "nationalization" of Islam, i.e. the conditions which permitted the religion to take root across the land beginning from the middle of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The fall of the last imperial dynasty in 1911 and emergence of the Republic of China brought on new challenges and opportunities for the spread of Islam, and these are discussed in the third chapter. The next chapter looks at Islam in Communist China ("New China"). The final chapter presents the authorities' attitude towards Muslims and Islam today. With some photographs. Translated from the Chinese.
