Chinese Medicine Men: Consumer Culture In China And Southeast Asia
by Cochran, Sherman
About This Book
One of the largest export industries in pre-World War II China was in Chinese medicines and pharmaceuticals. This study shows how in the period 1880-1950 the industry developed, often under the direction of family networks, so that it spread throughout China, Southeast and East Asia. Traditional, innovative, and foreign techniques are shown to have worked together with political factors in the creation of a new consumer culture. With black-and-white illustrations, bibliography and index.
