Health And Society In Bengal: A Selection From Late 19Th-Century Bengali Periodicals
by Bose, Pradip Kumar (Ed.)
About This Book
In the second half of the 19th century an increasing amount of Western Europe's scientific and medical knowledge and ideas came into Bengal where local medical traditions and practices had of course existed for centuries. Several medical and other journals in Bengali had articles on issues associated with the co-existence of these distinct approaches to health and disease. In this volume some 35 of these articles are translated from Bengali. They discuss indigenous medicine, national health, sexuality and sexual relations, public health (mainly plague, malaria and small pox) and also issues of medical education.
