This is a facsimile of the widely recognised 1900 text "Malay Magic" by W. W. Skeat (1866-1953). The 2005 introduction by J. M. Gullick discusses Skeat's methods of work and the anthropological/folklore assumptions current at the end of the 19th century. Skeat's field study was done in Selangor 1891-1897 and he recorded in detail many local beliefs, ceremonies and practices including chants and verses which were still part of rural life in a time when profound social changes were already being felt in Malaya.
