Property & Politics In Sabah, Malaysia: Native Str Uggles Over Land Rights
by Doolittle, Amity A.
About This Book
In 1990, the destruction of a richly-endowed forested area in Sabah by local villagers, traditionally seen as the guardians of their environment, surprised many environmentalists and outsiders. This study explores historical, economic, legal and political factors which influenced the villagers' attitudes and way of life. The author's 1990s fieldwork in North Sabah and application of the current methodologies of political ecology analysis enabled her to identify issues with local and global relevance. Pointers to positive state-society collaboration in the use of natural resources are explored. With glossary, bibliography and index.
