Terra Australis 22: The Archaeology Of The Aru Isl Ands, Eastern Indonesia
by O'connor, Sue; Matthew Spriggs; Et Al
About This Book
These 14 separately referenced papers are the fruit of the 1995-97 first archaeological research done in the Aru Islands of Eastern Indonesia since A R Wallace wrote warmly of the islands and their inhabitants in 1857. The ANU archaeologists found evidence of 30,000 years of human settlement and give details of evidence from the period when there were linkages with Greater Australia. Artefacts and remains are seen to indicate changes in environment and culture through to pre-Colonial periods of ceramic and Bird of Paradise trading with Portugese and Dutch merchants. With tabulated data, black-and-white photographs, and sketch maps.
