About This Book

This well-illustrated and ground-breaking study of the Chinese presence in regional New South Wales is part of the Golden Thread project which has since 1997 been researching and recording oral history on the Chinese contributions to the life of the State. Much largely-forgotten information and material has been unearthed. The patterns of migration and settlement traced from early in the 19th century include the importation of indentured labourers when the supply of convicts dried up and the thousands who in the 1850s were drawn by the Gold Rush. Many died or returned to China and this study traces the lives and occupations of many families who remained. The attitudes of white Australians, marriage patterns, occupational trends, family traditions and distinctive artefacts are discussed and illustrated with photographs of high quality. With bibliography and index.
