Durga/Umayi: A Novel
by Mangunwijaya, Y. B.
About This Book
This satirical 1991 Indonesian novel by the late notable engineer, architect, Catholic priest and political activist Y.B. Mangunwijaya opens windows onto many aspects of Indonesian culture including political ideas, gender concepts and the widely pervasive world of traditional magic and shadow plays. Set in 1930s Java, the story follows the fortunes of a poor village woman who becomes a servant in the household of President Soekarno and does well for herself while also losing her kin and identity. The translator well conveys the effects of violence on ordinary people and the unique magical realism, which is a significant component on Indonesia's contemporary scene.
