This book incorporates work done over many years by the internationally recognized anthropologists Jane and the late Lucien Hanks (d.1988). They led ethnographic surveys in the upland communities on the Thailand/Burma border in 1964, '69, '74 and '76, a period of major political, social and economic changes. Many information and many insights are presented on the 320 very diverse villages of the Lahu, Yao, Lisu and Akha people and their relations with Thailand's administration, and the international cross currents of military, religions, trading, tourism and media forces which impinge upon them.
