Country Of Memory, The: Remaking The Past In Late Socialist Vietnam
by Tai, Hue-Tam Ho (Ed.)
About This Book
This collection of essays by US-based academics was initiated at the 1996 annual meeting of the Association for Asian Studies. It is an exploration of how Vietnam is remembering its past, a past being continually recast by official policies and priorities and localised needs and pressures. Part One looks at traditional and other ways of constructing memory. Part Two concerns the repackaging of the National Spirit in painting under the Revolution, and the manufacture of nostalgia in Vietnam's tourist industry. Part Three is on gendered memory in museum, cinema and community commemoration. Referenced, with bibliography, glossary and index.
