by Kroes, Gerco
About This Book
The aboriginal Semai people of West Malaysia now number about 30,000 and live in southwest Perak and west Pahang. After an overview of aborigine and Semai history, the study focuses on Semai traditional beliefs and practices in relation to health and illness and relates these to parallel Malay traditions. Semai vocabulary, the place of spirits, shaman and ritual, and beliefs about life and death are discussed. The nature of Semai/Malay interaction is explored and their cultural differences considered. Assimilation, conversion and future developments are among the matters raised in this scholarly monograph.
