Ruthless Compassion: Wrathful Deities In Early Indo-Tibetan Esoteric Buddhist Art
by Linrothe, Rob
About This Book
The "wrathful deity" is viewed by the author as an especially revealing ideological marker in the development of esoteric Buddhism, which, so far has only been sketchily understood. In this volume, he has meticulously assembled hundreds of works of art to determine the chronology of their iconographic themes. He draws on the collection of surviving sculptures from the 6th to the 13th centuries at widely scattered sites in India, Europe and America, and in some cases, cross-references South Asian images with examples from western Himalaya, Tibet and China.
