About This Book

The author of this collection of essays develops three major and interrelated fields and the chapters are grouped accordingly. Part one examines the relation between her autobiographical identity - woman, Chinese, Malaysian, Asian, postcolonial. Her essays ponder gender, racial, language, and national identities. The second part covers three very different English Asian writers. Zulfikar Ghose, Timothy Mo, and Kamala Das, whose writings do not easily fit into the borders of country literature but are representative of the transnational writer. The third part deals more specifically with Malaysian and Singaporean literature and the differences between early and contemporary writings are examined. Shirley Lim currently teaches at the University of Califiornia, Santa Barbara.
