About This Book

The novel "Not Out of Hate" became popular in Burma on publication in 1955. The author Ma Tin Hiang (1917-82) was a leading writer, journalist and socio-politico activities throughout her life. She wrote under the oen name of Ma Ma Lay. This novel, her fifth, is the first Burmese novel to be translated and published abroad. "Not Out of Hate" is more than just a love story; it offers insights into colonial and local perspectives and misconceptions in the 1939-42 periods. The afterword compares appreciatively this novel with George Orwell's widely known 1934 "Burmese Days".
